FFA NSW

Southern Zone Championships

The Southern Zone Competition was well attended with 23 fly fishers. Welcome to new members Jan Vincent, Gordon Smith, Greg Smith (no relation to Gordon) and young gun Andrew Barker.

Congratulations to non-members Mudeye Mick who narrowly won the comp and commiserations to Chris Dawson who's chances to win the comp slipped away when he found himself without a motor 20 minutes into the last session. Chris still managed a second place and Rob Attkins came in third. Team results are on the final "quicklink" below. If I have the team members or names wrong just let me know and i'll fix it. The main purpose in having teams for this comp was to prove the computerized scoring system works.

Also special thanks to Royce Baxter who came to our workshop on Friday and presented a thought provoking paper on the psychology of competition fly fishing and then stayed and fished in the competition.

Detailed results are on the links below. The scoring was trailed with fish between 10 and 20 cm scoring 100 points. On the last day I scored 20 cm fish as 100 points instead of the customary 500 points and I have adjusted that in the score sheets below. Rectification of that error made no change in the results posted at the end of the comp.

Peter Walsh and Jim Blyton unfortunately had to drop out of the comp half way through due to ill health and we all wish them a speedy recovery.

Seven FFA NSW members and Royce Baxter from FFA Vic qualified to fish in the 2008 Nationals.

Many thanks to all who attended and particularly to Rob Staples who set up and liased with the Adaminaby Country Inn Motel to deliver an excellent venue and meals and to Geoff Naylor for coordinating the competition.

Regards,

Chatto.
