International Fly Fishing Competitions


 

Currently Fly Fish Australia Inc. selects teams to fish in three (3) international fly-fishing competitions. 

 

The World Fly Fishing Championship

 

The World Fly Fishing Championships are organized by the host country which is selected on a tender basis in much the same way countries tender for the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games. The World Championships are then planned and run by the host country in conjunction with the international body “Federation De Peche Sportive Mouche” which is generally referred to as just Fips Mouche.

 There are currently 27 countries eligible to compete in the World Championships.

 Teams are selected from the best competitive fly fishers in their country, with five fly fishers competing for Individual Champion and World Champion Team. Teams are often led by a Team Captain who acts as a reserve fisherman. 

 For Australia FFA selects its world team from the top 15 ranked members from the  Australian National Fly Fishing Championships held two years earlier than the year of the World Fly Fishing Championships.

Australia sends a fly-fishing squad of five members plus one reserve.

The Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships

 


The Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships are organized by a host country selected in much the same way as the host country for the World Fly Fishing Championships is determined.

 The Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships are held in even numbered years and also generally in the odd numbered years when the Worlds are held in the United Kingdom in that same year.

 

Australia sends two teams of six members. Members of the Australian "World Team" are invited to fish in the first team and the remaining team members for the first team and all the second team are selected by the selection committee of FFA generally from the remaining top 15 ranked members from the current Australian National Fly Fishing Championships that was held two years earlier than the year of the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships.

The Oceania Fly Fishing Championships

 


Only countries located around the “Pacific Rim” qualify to submit teams to participate in the Oceania Fly Fishing Championships.

 The Oceania Fly Fishing Championships are hosted alternatively by Australia and new Zealand.

 

Because the competition is held closer to home and travel costs are therefore much less places in the Oceania Teams are much sort after.

 

The two Oceania teams will be selected generally from the remaining top 25 ranked members from the Australian National Fly Fishing Championships (after selection of the World and Commonwealth team) that was held two years earlier than the year of the Oceania Fly Fishing Championships.

The European Championships

 

Members of FFA are invited to nominate and attend the European Fly Fishing Championships at their own expense. One team of five can attend and if the number of nominations exceed that number then the FFA Selection Committee will select the team taking into account the FFA selection criteria.
