State Fly Fishing Competitions

 STATE FLY FISHING COMPETITIONS

State competitions are organized by State Chapters under the auspice and control of FFA.  State FFA competitions are open to member of FFA as well as non-members of FFA but in all cases the rules of FFA are strictly enforced.. Those rules have been developed to support "catch and release" fly fishing, good sportsmanship and competitions that operate on a "level playing field" and the rules in their full form or abridged form from the can be viewed or downloaded from the Documents & Form page that is accessed from the drop down menu under "FFA Topics".

As well as standing alone State FFA competitions are also qualifying events for the FFA National Fly Fishing Championships. Progress to the nations is however only open to members of FFA who are financial members of FFA at the time of the start of a qualifying competition and through the nationals and who have indicated to the organizers prior to the start of that competition that they are seeking to qualify for entry to the nationals.

From 2006 members of FFA have been entitled to seek to qualify to fish at the Nationals at as many competitions as they like.

The maximum number of competitors that can qualify to fish at a National Competition is the 1/3 of total competitors (rounded up) in a competition. Please note that positions not filled at one competition will not be transferable to another competition.

For further information regarding state competitions, select the "FFA Chapters" link on the FFA website www.flyfishaustralia.com.au

You can also select the "Contact details" details link also on the website and then make contact with a state committee member for further competition and chapter details.

FFA MEMBERS CAN PROGRESS TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

IN ONE OF TWO WAYS

  1. State competitions as well as standing alone are also qualifying events for the Fly Fish Australia National Championships.

  • At the time of registering at state competitions competitors must nominate if they are seeking to use the competition to qualify for the FFA National Championships of the same year.

  • Please note that only financial members of FFA at the time of registration can seek to qualify for the national championships.

  • All competitors at the nationals must be financial members of FFA.

  • From 2006 members of FFA have been entitled to seek to qualify to fish at the Nationals at as many competitions as they like.

  • Please note that positions not filled at one competition will not be transferable to another competition.

  • The maximum number of competitors that can qualify to fish at a National Competition is the 1/3 of total competitors (rounded up) from that state plus any interstate competitors that finish in the top 1/3 of competitors in a competition.
    Example : 30 competitors, 27 Tassie, 2 Vics & 1 NSW
Tassie automatically sends top 10 Tasmanians ( 33% of overall competitors) if a NSW or Vic ends up in the top 33% he or she is also eligible.

  1. Subject to fishing in at least one state competition members of FFA who travel to and participate at Worlds competitions & Commonwealth Competitions as, team members including fishing team members, reserves, or other positions appointed by the board of FFA such as non-fishing team captains and team managers are granted automatic entry to the nationals in the same year they participate in the Worlds competition or Commonwealth Competition. Members of Oceania teams do not get automatic entry to the nationals and are expected to qualify for entry through state competitions.

NATIONAL FLY FISHING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Australian National Fly Fishing Championships are held every year. Generally the National Competition is held in November or December but there is no reason why a state could not make a case to stage the National Competition at another time of the year.  National Competitions have been staged by each state chapter of FFA except Western Australia and are organized by the state chapter of FFA in conjunction with the board of FFA.
